Tree Planting Programs
Restoring ecosystems and empowering communities across Uganda through strategic reforestation
Project Context
The Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU), with support from Fair ventures Worldwide and other dedicated sponsors and donors, leads the Tree Planting Project, a flagship conservation initiative designed to restore degraded landscapes, enhance community livelihoods, and combat climate change. Through this project, GFU partners with smallholder farmers across Uganda, providing high-quality tree seedlings, technical support, and training in agroforestry and sustainable land management practices. The project empowers local communities to integrate trees into farming systems, contributing to carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience, while creating economic opportunities through sustainable forestry and tree-based enterprises.
Uganda continues to face rapid deforestation and land degradation due to agricultural expansion, charcoal production, and unsustainable land use. Recognizing the urgent need to restore ecosystems, GFU initiated the Tree Planting Project to promote reforestation and sustainable agroforestry systems that harmonize environmental conservation with community development.
Since its inception, the project has expanded to multiple districts, working closely with community-based organizations, local leaders, and farmer groups to ensure active participation and ownership.
Coverage Across Uganda

Approach & Implementation
At Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU), we believe that sustainable forest restoration requires more than just planting trees; it demands an approach that integrates ecological health, social empowerment, and economic opportunities.
Key Focus Areas
Smallholder Tree Planting
Empowering farmers to establish mixed forests of indigenous, fruit, and fast-growing timber species
Tree Monitoring (TREEO)
Using digital tools to monitor growth, location, and carbon capture with full transparency

High-value Commodity Crops
Promoting sustainable cocoa, hass avocado, and coffee cultivation systems
Large-scale Forest Restoration
Combining enrichment planting with FMNR for forest and community restoration
Government Collaboration
Working closely with district authorities to advance landscape restoration initiatives
Farmers are encouraged to own the process, ensuring sustainability beyond external support. The project also collaborates with schools, community forest groups, and youth associations to promote environmental stewardship at all levels.
